Arte
Acción Copán Ruinas has it's own television program!
In 2008 we produced each week a new episode of Mini-Mundo, a
25 minute show for children with different sections such as storytelling;
games; history; scientific experiments, Maya culture; interviews; crafts
and much more.
Filmed and produced with the help of local children.

Of course we also teach video workshops to our students and twice a year we edit a short impression of our latest projects. Click here for a sample.
With our
traveling film festival we bring movies to the people! Whenever we can
we pack our equipment and show latin american cinema in remote corners
of the country where people often have never seen a movie in their lives. arteaccioncopan@yahoo.com
Our first documentary, La Cultura Maya en Copán (Dec. 2007) explores the living Maya culture in this town through interviews with community leaders, archaeologists and many indigenous Maya Chortí people. Anyone who thinks there are no living Mayas left in Copán should see this film!
See below a list of all
our activities!
* Traveling Film Festival Carrizalón
This time we took our traveling film festival to the Maya chortí community of Carrizalón, home of our co-worker Moisés Mancía. The festival was quite a success with more than 150 people showing up, many of them who had never seen a movie before. We showed some episodes of our program Mini-Mundo as well as our documentary about contemporary Maya culture in Copán in which some people from Carrizalón appear. They couldn’t stop laughing at seeing themselves! October 1, 2010
* Maya DVD
With volunteer Judith Bardoel from Holland and her experience in the area of video we’ve started a new project combining video with theater. The end result will be a DVD with animations on the Mayan culture made by children; a dramatization of a story of Popol Vuh; and interviews with puppet Balám and children from Maya Chortí communities. * Puppet Show and Traveling Film Festival
With puppeteer David Vivar of Teatro Latino in Guatemala, we headed to the community of Boca del Monte for a presentation of Mayan fables. A huge crowd was waiting for us. The presentation was on the football field is in front of the school. It was a beautiful afternoon and the children had a lot of fun. We continued the event with a film festival: we presented an episode of Mini Mundo Maya, then showed a selection of the results of our new video project. We ended the festival showing Apocalypto. While waiting for the public to arrive, we set up the equipment for the film presentation. We started with Mini-Mundo-Maya, our television program for children. We continued with the movie Tonta, tonta pero no tanto with the Mexican comedian Marcia Velasco (La India Maria). There was lots of laughs all through the night.
In the community of Santa Cruz we began again with the presentation of Mini –Mundo, then we presented the film El Norte, a production of Gregory Nava, released in 1983, featuring the journey of two Guatemalan immigrants to the United States. May 6 & 12, 2010

*Film Festival & Video-Story in La Pintada
So far, video as a medium has been pretty abstract for the participants of this
first Video-Story project, but when the results were shown during the film festival
in their community, everything fell in place…. Recognition, pride, and
yes, maybe some embarrassment here and there too. But mostly, the children loved
seeing their own production amongst friends and family members. They were the
stars of their own show! It was the 111th Film Festival!!! August 6, 2008
*Video-Story
Part I in La Pintada After doing several Photo-Story projects, we thought
it was about time to do something new. In July our volunteer Rosan Breman started
the first Video-Story project in the community of La Pintada and the town of
Copán Ruinas. Nine children, age ten to fifteen, were given a camera
for 24 hours to film their own life. Most of them never used a video camera
before, so they were very excited to participate. Before
the children started filming, they received a theoretic class. In these lessons
we explained the basis principles of the camera. We also talked about what the
children would like to film and how they could do this. A few suggestions were:
film your parents, brothers and sisters, school, the house you’re living
in or the food you daily eat. Besides, and this was very important, add your
personal opinion. So while they were filming, the children had to tell something
about their subject. Next to this, we also conducted interviews with all of
the children. The information of this interview is used in the final films to
give a more completed impression of the children’s life.
After being edited in our office in Copán, the result will be a 30 minute
documentary containing an introduction of the project, a selection of the films
and an impression of the film festival in La Pintada, on august 5th. June – August, 2008 *Traveling
